Bringing a pet in to your home can be one of the most rewarding and joyous experiences of your life, however it’s a big decision to make and you have to be willing to take on that responsibility for the life you are bring in to your home.
A pet isn’t just a fad or a something to play with, it is a new member of your family and you need to be ready and willing to care for it the same way.
Research the type of Pet you want to own
This could be fun for the entire family, but please do understand that the animal you get should go hand in hand with the amount of time you are willing to put in. For example, if you want an easy to manage pet you can always go for fish. However, if you are getting larger animals, like dogs please do understand the commitment you are taking on. Also take in to account any allergies etc. that family members may be having.
Schedule an appointment with Vet
This could help give you a lot of information in relation to care and maintenance of the pet you are going to be getting. The vet could also give you some insight in to health issues and/or early pet care costs that may be involved. For example, dogs will need a number of vaccinations and specialized food supplements to ensure a good healthy growth in the first few months.
Prepare their bathroom
Choose and make arrangements for where the animal’s bathroom will be. For example a cat would need a litter box. Choosing the place is important as once trained the animal will keep returning to the same place.
Prepare the food
You must understand the feeding requirements of your new pet, be it a cat, dog, bird or fish, the vet would be able to provide you important information on what to feed your pet as well as what to avoid. For example there are some fruits and vegetable that should be avoided with dogs they are susceptible to reactions and illness.
Make time to play
This is very important for cats and dogs mainly as they thrive on physical activity and attention. So please do understand that puppies do grow in to dogs and that all members of the family should be willing to spend time with them for their health and wellbeing.

On a serious note, please be aware that getting a pet is a responsibility. Thousands of animals are discarded all the time by irresponsible owners that are unwilling to look after them. Please do not make an animal suffer once the novelty of having a pet has worn off.
You can always speak to your vet and find out where your nearest animal shelter is and give one of these animals a forever home they deserve. All a pet wants to do is please its master, please don’t throw them away like any other toy.
