How much do you know about our National Flag??

It’s September and National Day is just around the corner so Albaloo is helping you brush up your knowledge on how our flag came to be what it is today.

The flag means a lot all us Malaysians but here are some facts you probably did not know:

  1. The Malaysian flag was actually designed by an architect as recently as 1963. Mohamed Hamzah, a 29 year old architect working in the Public Works Department (JKR) in Johor Bahru, Johor.

  2.  It was raised for the first time on 16th September 1963 and was the winning entry of a contest for a new flag to replace the old Malayan Union Flag.

  3. The “Jalur Gemilang” (Stripes of Glory) was named in 1997. The Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamed picked the name Jalur Gemilang to project the country’s onward drive towards continuous growth.

  4. The Malaysian flag consists of 14 red and white alternating stripes that represents the 14 states in the country along with a crescent and 14 point star, Bintang Persekutuan.

  5. The yellow crescent represents Islam the official religion of the country, while the star symbolizes the unity among the states.

The flag represents all of us in this country and to believe in our flag is to believe in what we stand for as a nation. In a short span of time we have progressed much and in our journey as a nation we have even more to achieve and contribute to the human race.

So this National Day remember how far we have come, maybe drive around and look at the development that has taken place and even what infrastructure is yet to come. Yes we may not be a perfect republic, we are a young nation and we have much more to achieve in the decades that lay ahead of us.

Happy National Day patriots!
